Edgerton Student Advances to National Level in SPJ High School Essay Contest
In an effort to increase high school students’ knowledge and understanding of the importance of independent media in our lives, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) asked students across the country to answer the question “Why is it important that we have news media that are independent of the government?” in the 2012 High School Essay Contest.
Dozens of students from across Wisconsin submitted their essays to the contest. Members of the SPJ Madison Pro Chapter chose an essay by Abby Lawrence, an eleventh grader from Edgerton High School, Edgerton, Wis., to advance to the national level.
National winners will be announced in early May. First place receives a $1,000 scholarship, second place a $500 scholarship and third place a $300 scholarship. All scholarships are funded by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation.
